| Melochrome:Melochrome formed in Chicago between 1996 and 1998, evolving into the core lineup of Pramod Tummala (vocals, guitars, keys), Thomas Stanley (drums, guitars), and Darlene Poole (vocals, bass, keys). This Is Motion, their 3rd album, will be released by Loose Thread on September 24.Melochrome recorded their debut album, The Music We Make, in the fall of 1998 with producer Keith Cleversley (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Spiritualized), which became the maiden release on Loose Thread Recordings in November of 1999. In the summer of 2000, Melochrome began work on their 2nd full length, Stay a Little Longer (released in September 2001), with new keyboardist Justin Mayer engineering the sessions. Over the course of 8 months, the band recorded in various locations while experimenting with horn and string arrangements, and working with guest players Dave Max Crawford (trumpets), Julie Pomerleau (viola, violins), and Lambchop's Deanna Varagona (baritone sax, cello) to create a richer, more orchestral sound. In the winter of 2001, Melochrome began work on This Is Motion, with Justin behind the boards again, finishing up in June of 2002. Guest appearances include Jon Hensley (from The Cricket Rumor Mill) contributing bass to "Seaside Instrumental" and Wendell Von Brenner playing trumpets and mellophones on several tracks. The new album shifts away from the guitar heavy songwriting of their previous work and finds the band blending their favored instrumentation (Rhodes piano, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, drums, moog, horns) with warm electronics.Melochrome will be touring the Midwest and East Coast in support of This Is Motion in the fall of 2002.Press on Stay a Little Longer:"A pleasantly blended hypnotic symphony including analog keyboards, horns, and acoustic guitar." - Alternative Press"The best parts of Melochrome's second record are like the diverse tastes of a long-simmered stew, richer and more complex than the simple ingredients lead one to expect...Melochrome is more than the sum of its influences, a rare enough thing in current indiedom." - CMJ New Music Monthly"Lovely, lulling, ambient, Enoesque indie-rock from Chicago." - Chicago Sun-Times"warm, romantic arrangements, sweetly delivered with a sense of laid-back calm and clarity...a great late-night spin" - The Big Takeover"a pleasant backdrop of sounds to the changing and eventual falling of the leaves with their syrupy melodies, soft drumming, and Pramod Tummala's sweet vocals." - Copper Press"Melochrome has created an album that gradually works its way into your subconscious -- never being too obvious about it, but demanding repeated listenings nonetheless...beautiful pop music." - Splendid"There's a certain somber classicism here...Melochrome employ twin male and female lead vocalists to stunning effect." - Vendetta"Stay a Little Longer is indie-pop perfection." - Yeah Yeah Yeah"the faint, glowing songs of Melochrome's Stay A Little Longer are majestic...positively re-enforcing the power and beauty of music." -In Music We TrustPress on The Music We Make:"Lucid music that, if anything, reaches aphrodisiac qualities." - Spin.com"one of the few notable American dreampop LP's of the decade." - The Big Takeover"There's beautiful control to the resonance...Melochrome could usher in an era of analog keyboard-driven psychedelia." - Pitchforkmedia.com"Shimmering fluctuations and the underwater sonics of Fender Rhodes and noodled Moogs make their new release, "The Music We Make", perfect fodder for unraveling hearts and reassembled memories." - Maximum Ink"Melochrome knows how to write melodies and drip them all over the canvas using a healthy variety of means." - Signal Drench"Melochrome twist burbling keyboards and waves of seething guitar feedback into vibrant, droning pop songs." - Splendid"The Music We Make features nine tracks vibrating at similar frequencies, creating a cohesive, flowing record...a finely crafted debut." - Nude As The News"Melochrome do that boy-girl vocal harmony thing SO well and back it up very competently with a wall of lovely, dense, ethereal sound." - Downloads Direct |
